About
St. Michael-Albertville Youth Football offers flag football, modified Tackle Bar football, and tackle football, along with offseason workouts and practices. The program also includes Friday Knight Lights off-season training, a Youth and High School Team Joint Practice, and community events.
• Ages: 7–12 years old
• Schedule: Friday Knight Lights starts January 9th; Community Ed and STMA Travel Football seasons start in mid-August with Saturday games and run through mid-October
• Price: Non-Travel players interested in Friday Knight Lights pay a $50 off-season training fee; Community Ed 2nd/3rd Grade Flag Football costs $85; Community Ed 4th Grade Modified Tackle Bar costs $185; Community Ed 5th/6th Grade Tackle Football costs $185; STMA Travel Football costs $325
The St. Michael-Albertville Youth Football organization states that it is dedicated to fostering a nurturing environment where young athletes aged 7–18 can develop their skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork, and that it emphasizes personal growth and character development, inclusivity, accessibility, and values such as discipline, resilience, and camaraderie. Both Community Ed Football and STMA Travel Football are coached by volunteer parents, and travel teams have a head coach along with 3–4 additional coaches. Community Ed Football provides all equipment at no cost, and Community Ed players rotate through all positions, with everyone playing quarterback and running back at some point in the season in a non-competitive setting focused on learning fundamentals.
STMA Youth Football joined a new youth football travel league in 2024 with Monticello, Big Lake, Becker, Elk River, St. Francis, Zimmerman, and Rockford for grades 3–6, formed as an offshoot of the Twin Cities North Youth Football League and following the same rules and structure, with each city having a member on the league board and a stated goal of limiting travel for games, especially during the week. In the travel league, players learn 1–2 positions on offense and defense, and there are weight limits for carrying the ball by grade (90 lbs for 3rd, 105 lbs for 4th, 125 lbs for 5th, 135 lbs for 6th); players above those limits cannot carry the ball and must play on the offensive line but can play defense. STMA Travel Football offers year-round team and program opportunities, including community events, optional practices, workouts, and other off-season engagement such as team events and practices, and both leagues run a simplified version of the STMA Varsity Football playbook.
The organization notes that it is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated parents and community members to join the team and that families can follow STMA Youth Travel Football on Facebook for updates on community events. The program lists Steve Herman as a contact for St. Michael-Albertville Football at 763-350-9284.
