• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Seasonal camps and workshops during spring, summer, fall, and winter, with ScrapMobile providing 4–6 art-making workshops weekly
ArtStart was founded in 1988. The organization’s mission is to inspire artistic creativity and illuminate the connections among people, ideas and the environment through engaging artists, children, families, and communities in quality arts education experiences. ArtStart’s leadership includes Anne Sawyer, Executive Director, and Cindy Saucedo Smith, Workshops and Events Coordinator.
ArtStart operates ArtScraps, a creative reuse store of donated, recycled materials that offers educational activities, information, and displays on site, and serves as a destination for people to obtain materials and ideas for visual art projects with low environmental impact. Over 50,000 pounds of scrap material and discards are reused through ArtStart programs. ScrapMobile is a vehicle-based program that transports artful reuse workshops, artists, and materials to many partnering organizations, giving 4–6 art-making workshops weekly for youth and adults at recreation sites, housing complexes, after school programs, libraries, and other events in urban and suburban locations. ArtStart presents a multicultural, interdisciplinary view of the world through art classes and special programs focusing on the connection between humans and their environment, and models good stewardship of the environment by recycling materials for creative use throughout the 7-county Metro area.
ArtStart’s community involvement includes the Children’s EcoArts Festival, a free St. Paul citywide event that serves as a culmination of residencies and provides a showcase for young learners and professional artists, representing diverse cultures, to honor and celebrate the Mississippi River. ArtStart enables young people and families, especially those without adequate prior access, to participate in art-making using recycled materials through classes, opportunities at community festivals, and partnerships with schools and social service agencies.
