Science, Technology, and Engineering Preview Summer (STEPS) is an introduction to the world of science, technology and engineering, with the stated goal to expose learners to potential careers, college life and ignite an interest in STEM. The program focuses on igniting an interest in STEM for girls in grades 6th through 8th and gives participants a chance to gain knowledge about what engineers do. Girls have the opportunity to make new friends and learn from college students and teachers about engineering, and make new friends and gain college-life experience and recreation at St. Thomas.

Participants learn from instructors with extensive backgrounds in STEAM education. Because this program is at no cost, participants are selected randomly by lottery, and applicants are notified by the end of March whether or not they have been accepted to the STEPS program. When it comes to academic quality, U.S. News & World Report ranks St. Thomas #29 in the U.S. and #1 in Minnesota for engineering schools without a doctoral program. Families can also choose to use TommieBot, an AI search assistant developed by St. Thomas School of Engineering students and faculty.
