About
The Art Academy offers classes in drawing, pen and ink, watercolor, oil painting, and design. Classes take place in small groups, with class sizes that most often result in about 3–5 students per instructor, allowing for plenty of one-on-one instruction.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Courses offered in Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter quarters
• Price: Supplies typically cost about $35 and last many years.
The Art Academy has served the Minneapolis and St. Paul community for over 30 years as artists and teachers and is celebrating over 30 years of art education. The school’s mission statement is, “Study the past, live in the present, work toward the future.” The Art Academy uses unique, patented teaching methods, with programs structured so that classes are sequential and each one builds upon the last, and teachers follow a master/apprentice tradition that predates the Renaissance. The Art Academy is nondenominational and nondiscriminatory, offers a positive, non-competitive environment, and uses simple classroom rules in the children’s program. Adult classes foster camaraderie among like-minded individuals. The Art Academy does not require work outside of class, stresses practice over talent, welcomes new students of all skill levels, and offers private lessons based on instructor availability. Supplies are not included in tuition; new students receive a supply list by mail and can also download it from the school’s website.
The Art Academy received 2nd place in the Oil Painters of America 30th National Exhibition, 2021 – Student Art Division, for “Self-Portrait at Age 13” by Fina Mooney, a student at The Art Academy of St. Paul. One student, Fina Mooney, describes working at The Art Academy with Natural Pigments paints to match William Bouguereau’s palette, creating a color chart, and then applying thin layers of color values over an underpainting, focusing on shadow flesh tones and expressing appreciation for the instruction received.
