Westfield Junior Golf Summer Program
Westfield Golf Course, 1460 W 5th St., Winona, MN 55987
About
The Westfield Junior Golf Summer Program includes golf instruction in putting, chipping, short irons, middle irons, and longer irons-hybrids-fairways. Participants learn general golf rules, proper etiquette, and good sportsmanship, and take part in little contests during the instruction days. The program also includes a playing phase on the golf course, where kids are taken onto a hole at Westfield to learn the basics of a golf hole, including the tee ground, fairway, rough, hazards, and green.
• Schedule: Instruction days have two waves from 9:00am to 10:00am and 10:30am to 11:30am, with swing instruction fundamentals at the Driving Range on Mondays and Wednesdays through the remainder of June, and a playing phase with tee times from 8:00am to 9:15am each Monday and Wednesday morning until the end of July.
• Price: The Program is FREE to attend and participate!
Instruction days start at the Westfield Driving Range and the program begins at the putting green by the clubhouse. The program starts from the hole back toward the tee box, beginning with putting and then moving to other clubs, with a focus on using one basic swing for all clubs in the bag and emphasis on grip, stance, posture, and alignment. A modified set of junior tees is marked with junior tees, 200-yard markers, and 150-yard markers to keep play moving, and the program is described as no competition and as fun golf time where juniors have their own space in the morning.
The Westfield Golf Course practice facility includes 11 stalls with permanent turf mats with no limit on distance, yardage poles at 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 yards, a smaller “irons only” area where golfers can hit up to about 150 yards, and a practice area for putting and chipping along with a sand bunker. Instruction days are run by PGA Professional Brian Paulson, who is listed as the leadership for the program. T-shirts are provided for kids in the program, and the online sign-up asks for t-shirt sizes so shirts can be completed in a timely manner. Online sign-up is required, and sign-up for the Junior Golf Program is expected to go live around the first week of February each year. A break is usually taken during the week on the day closest to the 4th of July, depending on the calendar, and in past seasons a small party for the kids has been held to end the season. Pro Shop hours are listed as daily from 7:00am to dusk, with hours subject to change during early spring and late fall. Westfield Golf Club has been a part of the Winona community since 1923.
