The Greensboro Science Center has been operating since 1957, when it opened as the Greensboro Junior Museum. It began through a community effort led by the Junior League of Greensboro. The organization states its mission as “Inspiring curiosity and connecting communities through science and conservation.” It is accredited by both the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), a dual accreditation held by only 15 facilities nationwide. Unique features include combining a zoo, aquarium, and museum in one 22-acre facility, the Rainforest Adventure Maze interactive exhibit open through September 13, 2026, and the planned Expedition Rainforest: The Greensboro Biodome & Aquatic Rehabilitation and Conservation Center (ARCC), which is planned as a five-story Biodome and aquatic animal rehabilitation and conservation center with a Species Survival Plan breeding center for species such as sloths, toucans, and clouded leopards.
