French Hill Farm Summer Camps offer summer riding camps where campers take part in riding lessons, trail riding, and learning barn chores such as bathing, grooming, tacking up, cleaning stalls, and feeding the horses. The program includes Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate/JUMP, Jumping Camps, Kindercamps, a show camp, an Adult Horsemanship Clinic, and an IEA Educational Camp.
• Ages: 5–19 years old
• Schedule: Full week camps run five days, generally from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm with pick up at 3:00 pm, with Kindercamps running two days from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm with pick up at 1:00 pm.
• Price: Adult Horsemanship Clinic and IEA Educational Camp are $500 each; full week camps are $500 with a $350 deposit and $150 balance; Kindercamps are $175 with a $100 deposit and $75 balance; deposits are due to lock in a spot and are non-refundable after June 1, and there are no refunds of the balance for cancellations after June 1.
French Hill Farm Riding Academy opened in 1997, and French Hill Farm summer camps have been running since 1998. Instructors are USHJA certified and have many years of riding and teaching experience. The stated goal of the program is to teach students how to ride, handle, and groom horses safely and to the best of their ability, and to teach the basics of riding and taking care of horses in a safe and fun environment, with an emphasis that safety around horses is extremely important. Payments and registration are mailed to Leighanne Brocki C/O French Hill Farm, and application and deposit must be received together for sign-up, with no reservations accepted over the phone. Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced riders who are not current students are required to have an evaluation lesson at a price of $110 before signing up, and Jumping Camps are for French Hill Farm riders only and require instructor approval. School horses are described as carefully chosen for their quiet temperaments, good manners, and their abilities to help students learn the fundamentals of riding from the beginner to the intermediate/advanced level, and learning to jump over a course of jumps is included in lessons for students who wish to and are capable of participating.
Campers are asked to wear jeans or riding pants, and helmets, boots, and chaps are available to loan to riders who do not have their own. Families are told that campers should bring a sack lunch with a drink, a reusable water bottle, snack money for a vending machine or snacks, long pants such as breeches or leggings, tall socks, and boots with a small heel like paddock boots or Blundstones, and that if they have a riding helmet they may bring it, but not a bike helmet. There are no make-ups or refunds for missed camp days, and payment options include checks, cards, and Venmo @frenchhillfarm, with no cash accepted. One testimonial describes “the beautiful setting…the gorgeous facilities and the warm and friendly staff,” another calls French Hill Farm “the most beautiful, people friendly and supportive barn I know of,” and another says it “is my daughter’s absolute favorite place to be.”
