Swim team has two sessions, and swimmers must register for the first session to be able to swim in the second session. All new swim team swimmers swim with a coach during the first week of practice to make sure they qualify for the swim team, with a full refund if they cannot successfully complete the swim, and swimmers on the team must be able to swim 25 yards of the pool using both freestyle and backstroke and must know and understand basic concepts of swimming. The YMCA swim team promotes healthy lifestyles while embracing the four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Any youth wishing to use the pool during Family Open Swim is asked to take a swim test and is given a colored safety band to wear at the pool, and the Green Band deep water test includes specific swimming, treading water, and floating requirements without flotation devices or assistance. Children of diaper age must wear an approved swim diaper. In the pool area, clean balls, diving rings or sticks, noodles, goggles, and similar items are permitted if each item is clean and in good working condition, and no food and drink items are allowed in the pool area except water and water bottles for those exercising, with no glass containers permitted in the facility. Patrons are not permitted to flip from the side of the pool into the water, and no diving is permitted in the pool. Youth under 19 years are not allowed in the facility after 9 pm, and all non-member youth 18 and under must have waivers signed by their parent to use the facility.

At the Columbus Family YMCA, the stated mission is to strengthen the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and the Columbus Family YMCA is a United Way Member.
