The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Polk County is to enable all young people, especially those who need the program most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible people. The organization traces its history back to 1939, when construction began on what it describes as a bridge to the future for thousands of children from Polk County. The Club states that its impact extends to the families and communities of the children it serves by increasing graduation rates, lowering teen pregnancy and crime rates, and increasing volunteerism. The Clubs describe their role as providing a proactive alternative to school failure and the cycle of poverty for many of the families whose children they serve, and they offer academic, nutritional, and civic programs that address children at different stages of development. The program also notes that its after-school programs and nutritional dinners enable parents to work, and that it provides parents with peace of mind knowing that their children are safe and supervised and kept out of trouble through pathways to success.
