About
BrainSTEM Summer Camp offers hands-on projects in engineering, robotics, computer science, and architecture. Campers can take specific classes such as Engineering CAD I & II and Robotics I & II, with all activities centered on practical, hands-on work in these areas.
• Ages: 9–15 years old
BrainSTEM Summer Camp has been providing educational enrichment since 2016 and is described as a premier, locally focused STEM program in Bernards Township. The curriculum and projects are developed in-house and are not based on a mass-market, pre-made curriculum. BrainSTEM courses are offered to students in Somerset, Morris, and surrounding counties, and enrollment is first come, first served with payment guaranteeing a seat. The program is consistent with the mission of the Bernards Township Board of Education but is a private enterprise and is not Board of Education endorsed or sponsored. BrainSTEM is a member of the Bernards Township Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The program only uses Bernards Township School District, NJ certified Engineering Design and Computer Science teachers from Ridge High School and William Annin Middle School (WAMS). The leadership team includes BrainSTEM founder Mark Dotta, an Engineering, Robotics, and Architecture teacher at Ridge High School with 22 years of experience teaching industrial technology areas such as automotive repair, wood and metal working, engineering, energy, power, and transportation, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Technology Education from Millersville University and a master’s degree in Classroom Technology from Wilkes University. It also includes Mark Galesi, a Computer Science and Mathematics teacher at Ridge High School with over 17 years of experience and a BrainSTEM instructor since 2019, and Ryan Riess, an Engineering Design and Robotics teacher at WAMS with over 9 years of experience. Content-experienced counselors are hand-picked high school students who create a big brother/big sister atmosphere, and campers are introduced to teachers they will likely have at WAMS and Ridge High School, helping them feel more familiar with those facilities.
The camp’s mission is to spark student interest and offer educational classes that enhance their current education in robotics and engineering. The founder states that students will be engaged in hands-on projects as they learn how to problem solve and apply new technology. BrainSTEM and its staff have received recognition including the 2017 New Jersey Technology & Engineering Educators Association Teacher of the Year award (NJTEEA Teacher of the Year) and a 5-star rating on Google Reviews.
Parent comments about BrainSTEM Summer Camp include: “Taylor already can't wait to come back next year!” (Amanda O.), “Sahil and Rohan really enjoyed it and can't wait to come back next summer! They loved it.” (S.N.), “Boys are really enjoying themselves and learning a lot!” (Maria), “Louis already asks to sign up for the camp next summer!” (Xin), and “We will definitely sign up again next year.” (Ailsa). Other parents describe it as “such a great experience” with exposure “to so many great things at such a young age” (Jill), “wonderful 2-weeks” that were “super exciting” every day (Dihua G.), and a “great session” that their child “loved” (Dhananjay M.).
