School Programs & Tours at Red Mill Museum Village offers school groups structured tours that include hands-on activities such as candle making, wool processing, and woodworking basics. Students on the Colonial Life, Hands-On Experience Tour make and take home a hand-dipped candle and a Roving Sheep toy they create themselves. Tours also include time for a bagged lunch, with picnic tables provided for the group.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Most tours occur during the school day in April, May, and early June; each tour is 3.5 hours long, including 30 minutes for a bagged lunch.
• Price: Community & Industry Tour: $375 for groups of 30 or fewer students, each additional student $12. Colonial Life, Hands-On Experience Tour: $405 for groups of 30 or fewer students, each additional student $13. General admission: $12; seniors: $10; children 6–12: $10; members, veterans, and children under 6 receive free admission; active military, plus their family, receive free admission.
School Programs & Tours at Red Mill Museum Village includes options such as the Community & Industry Tour, which is STEAM-focused and emphasizes technology, engineering, and innovation from the 1800s to the early 1900s, and the Colonial Life, Hands-On Experience Tour, which focuses on daily life for children during the 1700s in rural New Jersey. The Community & Industry Tour features exploration of simple machines in the Red Mill, technological advancements in the Mulligan Quarry, a blacksmith demonstration in the forge, and a stop at the one-room Bunker Hill Schoolhouse, with the roles of children highlighted in each location and the experience tailored to be age-appropriate. The Colonial Life, Hands-On Experience Tour includes workshops around a reproduction 1700s log cabin, focusing on family life in a single-room cabin, the herb garden, and springhouse, along with visits to the Red Mill, the blacksmith’s forge, and historic limekilns, and it gives students an understanding and appreciation for the self-sufficiency of families in the colonial period. School Programs & Tours exhibits and programs are designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of the industrial, agricultural, and social history of the region and align with New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards, and tours can be tailored to meet specific student interests or modified for Scout, Senior, Youth, or Community Group needs.
The Red Mill Museum Village leadership team includes Executive Director Gina Sampaio; Deputy Director & Curator of Collections Elizabeth Cole; Curator of Education & Public Programming Robbie-Lynn Mwangi; Visitor Engagement Manager Jim Bernardo; Groundskeeper Ken MacLennan; Assistant to the Director Lynn Pierce; and Museum Administrator Andi Altvater. The Board of Trustees includes President Amy DeVita; Vice President Jim Weatherford; Treasurer Eugene Scuteri; Secretary Marguerite Murphy; and members Ray Bindus, Dan Shea, Joseph Eggert, Donna Stumm, Norma Kania, Jeremy Padmos, The Hon. The Friends of the Red Mill is a volunteer-driven organization that supports the Red Mill Museum Village by staffing the museum shop, assisting with special events, and volunteering on preservation and community projects. The Red Mill Museum Village is participating in Handwork 2026, presented by Craft in America, and will host exhibitions and events throughout 2026 with the Hunterdon Art Museum as a partner. The museum is open to the public year-round, offers a digital guide on the free Bloomberg Connects app with information in more than 47 languages, and is a partially wheelchair accessible space with an accessible parking spot in front of the mill and a video available on the lower level of the mill for those who cannot travel the stairs. Only service animals are allowed in the historic buildings.
