• Schedule: Class and lesson options are available Monday–Thursday from 10:30 AM–8:00 PM, Friday from 10:30 AM–6:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:30 AM–6:00 PM; hours may vary during summer and on show weeks.
Performers Theatre Workshop was founded by Juilliard graduates Esther and Howard Kravitz, who are described as career performers, and the program has a track record of student success since 1983. PTW reports that it has empowered young artists for over 40 years, has spent over 40 years building its community, and has increased its student enrollment more than ten-fold over the past 30+ years. The leadership team includes Dean Kravitz as Executive Artistic Director and Elisabeth Kravitz as Executive Program Director.
PTW teachers are conservatory trained, have been in Broadway shows and national tours, and have performed on Broadway, TV, or film, and the faculty are described as conservatory-trained experts with diverse high-level professional credits. The program states that it is New Jersey’s premier performing arts school and the #1 New Jersey performing arts school, and that it serves as a theater home for performers from all over New Jersey, including Essex, Morris, and Union Counties, and students in the greater tristate area. PTW describes its mission as providing the highest caliber of performing arts education to students of all ages and abilities and fostering individual growth in a caring, supportive artistic community.
Performers Theatre Workshop highlights more than 100 classes, private lessons, masterclasses, summer programs, and performance opportunities, with small class sizes and differentiated instruction techniques to support students at every level. The program describes a warm, supportive, culturally rich community, a non-competitive environment often called a “theatre family,” older students mentoring new and younger students, and personalized paths of study for each student, including musical arrangements and choreography customized to fit each performer’s range, ability, and growth. PTW states that it focuses on building self-confidence, work ethic, responsibility, and a strong sense of community and teamwork, and that it not only trains children to perform, but also prepares them to perform better on the stage of life.
Parent and student testimonials describe PTW teachers as always there to help, supportive, and caring, and say that past students have gone on to “great things,” giving parents confidence in the teachers and philosophy. One parent reports that the education a child receives at PTW will do them good in any field or path, and another parent notes that a child who initially lacked confidence to be onstage or speak publicly became “unstoppable” within two or three years.
