About
Camp Auxilium is a summer day camp conducted by the Salesian Sisters where campers take part in land and water activities such as swimming, mini-golf, archery, and using boats and kayaks. Campers also use trails, playing fields, playgrounds, pools, outdoor activity areas, Gaga Ball pits, covered activity areas, and a Low Ropes Course during camp days.
Camp Auxilium officially opened in July of 1961 and is operated by the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco. The camp’s mission statement says that it fosters the growth of the whole child—physical, social, emotional, and spiritual—according to the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Salesian spirit of St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello. The leadership team has included Sister Rosalie Di Peri, FMA, as Camp Director, along with Sister Theodora Carabin, FMA, Sister Domenica Di Peri, FMA, Sister Adeline Gastaldo, FMA, Mother Theresa Casaro as Provincial at the time, and Sister Mary Rinaldi, FMA. Red-Cross certified lifeguards are part of the camp staff. The camp notes that everyone is welcome regardless of race, religion, national origin, or creed, and that community members, local businesses, volunteers, and camp families have worked with Camp Auxilium to improve the campus. Camp Auxilium is described as a well-known and beloved member of the community, and some of the first campers have later returned as counselors and lifeguards, with multiple generations of families attending. The camp also reports that each day includes a swim, canteen, and recreational and patriotic activities. A nearly complete prehistoric mastodon skull, later named “Moe,” was discovered on the property and gifted to the Sussex County Historical Society Hill Memorial Museum.
