Steve & Kate’s Camp began in 1980, when Steve and Kate Susskind created a summer camp in response to seeing kids’ independence changing. The Paramus camp lists Bella as the Director. According to the camp’s mission statement, campers choose which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long, and this approach is described as a way for kids to be empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions. The program notes that staff are dedicated specifically to supporting the youngest campers through Youngest Camper Support Staff.
The camp offers several structural features, including the option to buy any number of days and send a child to camp on any day within the season, drop-off and pick-up at any time within camp hours, and long camp hours with snacks and lunch included. All-inclusive rates cover all camp hours from 8:00am–6:00pm, snacks and lunch, and any activities that interest the child. Families can purchase Day Passes with automatic full refunds for unused purchased days after the camp season, or buy a Summer Pass for unlimited use with an automatic refund of the difference if not enough days are used. Weekly specials change daily, and the season ends with a Carnival Day celebration that includes carnival games, extra treats, and chances to win prizes.
In partnership with fan favorite restaurants, the camp provides food that is described as food kids love. As summer approaches, registered families receive a link to a virtual camp orientation with information about local camp drop-off and pick-up procedures, how to check in and out each day, what to bring and not bring, and other camp details.
Testimonials describe the camp in various ways, including a quote from Andrew Stanton, Director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, who says that children at Steve & Kate’s “blossom and discover a freedom of identity” and that “kids find their thumbprint at Steve & Kate’s.” Apple’s Hot News states, “If kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve and Kate’s Camp.” Variety magazine notes that many children of people at Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic attend, and The Washington Post describes the camp as a blend of traditional camp with a modern, tech-focused approach and a laid-back, California-inspired aura. The Chicago Tribune states that “working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.”
