The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey began developing in 1931 when seven painters rented a studio loft together, and its official inception date is 1933. Its mission is to nurture the capacity for personal expression, expand the creative experience, and foster stronger communities by empowering people to see, make, and learn about art. Through exhibition, Studio School, and community programs, the Art Center engages seniors, at-risk youth, and adults with disabilities through in-community programs. The organization received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in 1981, a “Citation of Excellence” and “Major Impact Organization” designation from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in 2008, four Discover Jersey Arts People’s Choice Awards for “Favorite Place to Take an Adult Arts Class,” and has achieved KultureCity Certification.
