About
National Institute of Flamenco – Youth Flamenco Programs offers flamenco training that includes dance, theatre performances, and workshops. Youth programming includes Kids Camp and Festival Juvenil as part of Festival Flamenco Alburquerque, an annual international festival with performances by invited artists, workshops, and youth activities. Classes in this program begin on August 10, 2026, as part of a 9-week summer residency.

The National Institute of Flamenco was established in 1982. Its mission is to preserve and promote flamenco’s artistry, history, and culture by presenting flamenco and by educating the American family in this art form while emphasizing the positive influence of art on family and community. The Institute has created life-long pathways for student engagement through an Educational Cradle to Career Pipeline, in which flamenco study begins as early as three years of age at the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts and continues through a children’s curriculum and a pre-professional training program. Students in grades 6–12 may deepen their study of flamenco in the dance focus track of Tierra Adentro of New Mexico, a public charter school and one of the Institute’s educational partners.

It presents world-class flamenco, expands access to the study of flamenco, and affirms the transformative power of flamenco in communities across New Mexico and beyond. The Institute provides arts experiences rooted in excellence, creates international connections, and invests in local and national artists. It states that it has enriched the City of Albuquerque, the U.S. Southwest, the Americas, and beyond through flamenco music and dance, and that it has created life-long pathways for student engagement, encouraging permanent application of healthy patterns.
The National Institute of Flamenco proudly partners with the University of New Mexico (UNM), whose Department of Theatre and Dance is home to the only accredited dance program in the United States in which flamenco is a concentration (BA, BAIA, MA, MFA). The Institute also maintains an educational partnership with Tierra Adentro of New Mexico, a public charter school. Yjastros is the American flamenco repertory company and is a dance company in residency at UNM. Tablao Flamenco Albuquerque and El Farol Dinner Show at Santa Fe offer weekly shows connected to the Institute’s broader flamenco activity.
The National Institute of Flamenco is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Members of its leadership and artistic community include Eva Encinias, Marisol Encinias, Albuquerque Mayor Keller, Emily Bharatiya, Estela Zatania, Amy Schofield, Madison Olguin, Eloy Gonzales, Carmen Coy, Jesús Perona, and Iván Vargas. Madison Olguin received the 2023 Princess Grace Award. Marisol Encinias is a 2024 Woman of Influence Awardee and a 2024 Advocacy Leadership Institute Fellow.
