Tahoe Science Center Education and Outreach Programs include hands-on activities such as exploring interactive exhibits, learning about the lake ecosystem, and seeing native and invasive species in aquariums. Participants can take a journey on a virtual research boat, be a scientist in a virtual ecology lab, create their own watershed in an interactive sandbox, and watch the 3D movie “Lake Tahoe in Depth.” The program also offers opportunities to participate in Citizen Science projects.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Guided tours with advance timed tickets, with morning tour times and separate afternoon self-guided hours
• Price: Cost is $5–$10 per person for guided tours of the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center; TERC Tahoe Research Vessel recharge rate per hour: Base Recharge Rate $141.00, External Recharge Rate $188.00; nightly rates at Malyj Manor (per person): Base Recharge Rate $21.00, External Recharge Rate $28.00.
UC Davis began conducting research on Lake Tahoe in 1958, and there are over 60 years of data describing the lake’s ecosystem, watershed, and airshed that inform the Tahoe Science Center Education and Outreach Programs. The stated goal of the education programs is to provide science-based information about the Lake Tahoe region in order to foster responsible action and stewardship. TERC currently interacts with more than 11,000 people annually, including over 4,000 local students who learn about the ecosystem of Lake Tahoe and how they can protect the Tahoe basin, through public tours, monthly lecture series, docent training, the Youth Science Institute for high school students, and events such as Science Expo in March and Family Science Day in August. The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences building includes platinum LEED lab facilities, and the 3D movie “Lake Tahoe in Depth” shown in the theater is described as award-winning.
