The camp is connected to wellness programming, environmental programming, holistic learning experiences, and environmental education.
• Ages: 8–17 years old
• Schedule: Junior Sail Camp runs for 5 days
• Price: Junior Sail Camp from $350
The Head Instructor and Director of Programs & Operation is Captain Pierre Wallinder, who has been an ASA instructor since 2004 and also holds Yacht-Master PZB credentials, has served as Past Trustee/Maritime Chair at WNY Maritime Charter School, and has been the Provider for On-The-Water Training since 2006. Sail Buffalo Sailing School has been based out of Lake Erie’s shorelines for over 10 years, launched its Eco Floating Classroom in 2011, and merged with Cazenovia Community Resource Center in 2012. The school offers Buffalo’s only nationally ASA-accredited sailing education, with American Sailing Association certification courses from Basic Keelboat 101 through 106, and ASA is endorsed as an official licensing program in the U.S. by the National Association of Boating Administrators and the United States Coast Guard.
Sail Buffalo’s mission is to make sailing affordable, accessible and fun for everyone, and to create an exciting, safe and secure facility on Buffalo’s Outer Harbor that enables public access to the waterfront through boating, wellness and environmental programming. The organization states that its goal is to provide a destination for on-the-water training, holistic learning experiences, wellness and environmental education regardless of income, gender and age, including people with disabilities, and to provide a safe-haven for young veterans and their families. Its community involvement includes transforming an abandoned inlet into a community boating center that provides public access to Buffalo’s waterfront and offering a place in the sailing community, with a testimonial noting that the team is passionate about the Buffalo community and sailing in general.
One testimonial describes Sail Buffalo as having no peer in the area with respect to facilities, summer camp for kids, kayak/canoe storage, and education/classes. Another testimonial from a parent notes that three kids, ages 14, 12, and 8, attended for a second year, did one week the first year and two weeks the second year, and that they loved each week more than the previous one and learned a lot. Additional testimonials highlight ASA 101 and ASA 104 classes with Capt. Pierre and other instructors as clearly structured, relaxing and fun, and highly recommended for learning to sail.
