About

Camp Good Grief is a bereavement day camp where children and teenagers take part in group therapy, art therapy, and music therapy. Campers also join in sports, swimming, arts and crafts, and exploring nature. Each afternoon includes a special event that is planned to bring the day to a close with fun and excitement, and activities are designed to provide age-appropriate information about grief while balancing work with fun and forging new friendships.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Price: Camp is provided free of charge thanks to our generous donors.

Camp Good Grief is a program of East End Hospice, which was founded in 1991. The camp is limited to 150 campers, and priority is given to first-time campers. Its mission is to bring children and teens who are grieving together in a caring and supportive environment. All Camp Good Grief therapists are licensed in their specialty and have many years of clinical experience, including advanced practice social workers, psychologists, and art and music therapists who have undergone extensive training by East End Hospice in the treatment of children’s grief. Volunteers complete hours of training and spend a year or more working under the supervision of social workers helping to co-lead children’s bereavement groups. The Camp Director is Angela Byrns, LCSW, who also serves as the Children’s Bereavement Coordinator for East End Hospice. East End Hospice is a NYS Certified Hospice serving the East End of Long Island, including The Hamptons and the Eastern Suffolk County Townships of Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southold, Shelter Island, Southampton, and East Hampton. A Camp Good Grief participant described the experience by saying, “It makes me feel a lot better that everyone in this room has lost someone and they all know how I feel.”
