The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum describes its mission as a combination of mansion, marine and natural history museum, planetarium and park dedicated to the education and enjoyment of people on Long Island and beyond. The mission focuses on preserving, interpreting, and enhancing the Eagle’s Nest estate as an informal educational facility, with many exhibition and program themes centered on Long Island’s Gold Coast Era. Programs are based on William K. Vanderbilt II’s wish that his marine, natural history, and ethnographic collections promote appreciation and understanding of the diversity of life, other cultures, and scientific knowledge, and planetarium programming focuses on scientific knowledge and reflects his sense of adventure and exploration through state-of-the-art entertainment. Other listed offerings include a Special Valentine’s Day Show called An Unusual Valentine Event on February 13 and 14, a Free, Drop-In Maker’s Workshop on February 14, Recess Workshops on February 16 and 17, Paper Crafting on February 19, a Black History Month Lecture on February 19, a Lunar New Year Celebration: Celebrate the Year of the Horse on February 21, A Long Island 250 Program on March 5, and an ongoing option to Buy an Engraved Vanderbilt Brick. The museum also features a BBC segment titled “Tour the Mansion with Vanderbilt’s Great-Great Granddaughter” and a presentation in which prominent architect James Smiros takes visitors through the Vanderbilt Mansion.
