The Lime Hollow Nature Center was founded in 1993. Its mission is to provide protection of the natural and cultural attributes of the Lime Hollow area. Lime Hollow is listed as one of the NYS DEC’s Watchable Wildlife sites and was added to the 2016 NYS DEC Open Space Plan for protection and preservation purposes.

Through a renewable use agreement, Lime Hollow began by utilizing 100 acres of land and two buildings belonging to the Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science of the US Geological Survey Department. The area purchased in 1998 was partly funded with a grant from the NYS Clean Air/Clean Water Bond Act. In 2015 Lime Hollow added an Environmental Education Center through a donation of a 5-acre parcel on Gracie Pond by Bestway Lumber and a partnership with OCM BOCES. Lime Hollow also maintains a nearby three-mile walking trail and a 16-acre parcel containing a marl pond owned by Cortland County.

Trails at Lime Hollow are free and open to the public from dawn to dusk. The property includes 13 miles of trails that go through rolling hills, shallow glacial valleys, forests, fields, streams, numerous ponds including marl ponds and vernal pools, and a peat bog, with a diversity of flora and fauna. The Trail for All is an accessible trail for people with all abilities, and all programs welcome people of all abilities. The Visitor Center facility includes a central exhibit space, a bird education room, several modular educational displays, a gift shop, staff offices, and green building features such as solar panels, composting toilets, and gray water systems. The Environmental Education Center is described as state of the art and net-zero energy. Repurposed old lumber mill structures became Camp Gustafson and now house part of the summer camp program. Lime Hollow provides year-round environmental education and recreation opportunities through the utilization and protection of the natural and cultural resources of the Lime Hollow area.
