The department is led by Commissioner Thomas Owens. The Town of Islip was incorporated in 1683 under English rule as a municipality within the State of New York, and it provides services to over 300,000 residents. Islip is the third largest town in New York State, and Islip MacArthur Airport provides many job opportunities. The Town’s Rifle Range is one of the very few such facilities on Long Island and serves a role in training individuals from law enforcement agencies including Nassau County Police, Sheriffs and DA, Fire Island National Seashore, Amtrak, DMV, Suffolk Courts, U.S. Treasury, Farmingdale Police Department and the New York State Park Police.
