About

Rochester Music Lab offers audio engineering and music performance lessons, along with one-on-one lessons to perform favorite songs and write original songs using music theory and creative writing techniques. Students can learn to play drums, guitar, piano, and steel drums, and can compose using virtual instruments while exploring recording, mixing, and mastering for music, podcasts, games, and film. The program also includes composing for film and animation, video games, and sound design, as well as electronic beat-making, exploring microphones and signal flow, exploring synthesizers, and using industry-standard software such as Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Studio One, Native Instruments and EastWest virtual instrument libraries, Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, and Construct 3 for basics of video game design. Group options include Drum Circle, Group Ensemble, creative workshops, and the option to schedule a tour and trial lesson.

Rochester Music Lab states that its mission is to be an educational space dedicated to creating, performing, and producing music, with a focus on inspiring curiosity, creativity, and confidence while students explore the possibilities of sound. The leadership and teaching team includes Travis Rankin, Jilli Walch, Cam Guck, Abi Culbert, Ted Canning, and Zak Spath. Travis is an RIT graduate with a degree in Music Technology, Music Performance, and Visual Culture and also studied Communication & Media Arts and Adolescence Education at MCC. Jilli is a University of Rochester graduate with a degree in Music and Brain & Cognitive Sciences. Cam is a Fairport High School graduate, and Abi assists with Group Classes and Music Exploration. Ted is a lifelong music educator specializing in steel drums with over 30 years of experience in playing and teaching steel pans, and he leads the Steel Drum Ensemble at RIT, leads a Community Steel Drum Band in Geneseo, and performs with Pan Loco. Zak is an RIT graduate with a degree in Computer Science and has studied djembe as a hobby since 2001, and he began facilitating drum circles through the TIES program in Rochester in 2003. Travis, Jilli, and Zak all facilitate drum circles through the TIES Program in Rochester.
