One River School describes its mission as transforming art education with a unique art and design program for all ages that is convenient, educational, and fun, and states that Student Success means more than making great art, focusing on the transformation that happens along the way. Signature programs include Art Shuffle® and Digital Art Shuffle®, as well as Art Shuffle® Plus, which is an open studio class for intermediate to advanced students to work on projects of their choosing. Classes are led by practicing artists, animators, and designers who bring real-world experience and industry insights into every class, and teaching artists are described as supportive mentors who meet students where they are and guide them forward.
The leadership team includes multimedia artist and educator Julia Bertussi, artist and educator Jaime Morrow, and artist and educator Dora Tomulic. Julia Bertussi is a graduate of Ithaca College with a BA in Art Education. Jaime Morrow earned a BFA in Illustration from the University of Hartford and has over a decade of experience teaching art. Dora Tomulic holds an MA in Fine Art from the Academy of Fine Art of the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and has experience as an art director in advertising, founder of a design school (Academy of Design, AoD), editor of a monograph about the archaeoastronomy of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Croatia, and contributor of a chapter to a book on poetic and theoretical ideas in visual art.
One River School provides all materials and states that it provides everything needed to get started on the first project, and students are instructed to arrive 5 minutes early on the first day. The program offers flexible makeups, unlimited makeup options, and the ability to start anytime with no long-term commitment. Members participate in members-only exhibitions and a Winter Student Show, and students highlight their accomplishments during student exhibitions in gallery spaces throughout the year. The program includes friendly group critiques facilitated by mentors and describes itself as a creative community where growth is celebrated and progress is visible.
Testimonials describe the school as “a big source of confidence and guidance in my art journey,” “magic for my daughter,” “my respite from the world,” and note that teachers have provided strong support during members’ time at the school.
