Hornell Area Concern for Youth was founded in 1975. It is a Family and Youth Service Agency serving all school-age children in Hornell and the surrounding areas, with a goal of providing educational, cultural, and social growth experiences for youth ages 8–19. The agency offers a well-rounded, comprehensive prevention program focusing on counseling, education, and activities, and focuses on social problems affecting youth such as substance abuse, teen pregnancy, poor decision making, and difficulties associated with society today. It provides a safe solace for youth to go after school and during the summer months and works to provide youth with developmental assets by offering programs, services, and a safe and positive environment to practice their skills. The leadership team includes Susan Hooker, Executive Director; Lisa Oliver, Director of Prevention; Lita Brown, Prevention Specialist; and Justin Berry, youth development educator. Hornell Area Concern for Youth partners with the Steuben Prevention Coalition and is funded by the NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), Steuben County, the City of Hornell, United Way of the Southern Tier, The Triangle Fund, and other private grants, and both of its sites host the Proaction Summer Youth Employment program where staff assist with employment readiness skills.
