Primitive Pursuits offers preschool, youth, teen, and adult programs that focus on wilderness skills education such as map reading, animal tracking, winter survival, and primitive technology. Participants may take part in activities including hikes, using maps of the 4-H property and choosing a destination for a hike, birding, tree lore and cultivation, bow-making, and permaculture. The program also offers seasonal options such as a Spring Break Camp, an Early Spring Hike, and an Adult Natural Archery Workshop, along with other adult opportunities.

Since 1998, it has been Primitive Pursuits’ mission to steward the health of the community by fostering life-long relationships with the natural world through exceptional mentoring and nature education, and this mission has continued for over 20 years. Staff share experience teaching in primary schools and universities as well as other wilderness education programs. Primitive Pursuits is a non-profit 4-H program in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, and each year hundreds of diverse youth from Tompkins County and beyond reconnect with the natural world through its year-round nature immersion programs. The Primitive Pursuits team recognizes that the land where they live and work exists within the territory of the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫʼ (Cayuga Nation) and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and acknowledges their enduring stewardship of this place throughout the centuries and still today. Cornell Cooperative Extension is an employer and educator recognized for providing equal program and employment opportunities in accordance with applicable laws.
