Adventure Boat Club Summer Camp Adventures
Adventure Boat Club / Hudson River Boating Adventures, 170 Abeel St, Kingston, NY 12401
About
Adventure Boat Club Summer Camp Adventures includes sailing, outdoor exploration on boats, hiking across uninhabited islands, and combing for treasure on deserted beaches. Campers take part in individualized, place-based outdoor exploration on boats with a very low student to teacher ratio of 3:1. Experiences on the water include being taught to sail and navigate by experienced educators and captains.
• Ages: 8–14 years old
Adventure Boat Club Summer Camp Adventures is led by Cheryl Demuth, Nick Rogers, and Maija Niemisto. Nick has decades of experience working on various vessels, tall ships, and boats, including crew experience on a research vessel conducting Atlantic Ocean fisheries surveys, and he was the longest running captain of the Sloop Clearwater. Nick has trained hundreds of people as sailing crew, rebuilt most of the historic wooden ship, and has shown thousands of kids the beauty and excitement of sailing on the Hudson River while using sailing as a teaching point for environmental action, social justice, education, and youth empowerment. Maija sailed and taught environmental science for over 10 years aboard the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, completed a Masters of Marine Science from Stony Brook University focusing on fish and plankton ecology of the Hudson Estuary, and co-authored “The Hudson - An Illustrated Guide to the Living River.” Cheryl started and ran a small preschool program called Livingston Street Early Childhood Community located in Kingston and worked in early childhood education.
The program’s mission states that its commitment to the Hudson River ecology and the surrounding communities drives the team to inspire others to experience, fall in love with, and care for the waters. Adventure Boat Club notes that it sails the waters of the historic territories of Wappinger, Mohican, and Munsee peoples, known as Lenni-Lenape or the River People, and acknowledges relationships and claims to this area maintained to the present day by these people and communities. The program also focuses on creating life-long friendships among participants and includes a land acknowledgement of Wappinger, Mohican, and Munsee peoples.
One testimonial from Hillary H. describes exploring secret coves and uninhabited islands, sailing beneath bridges, and experiencing a shift in perspective while on the water with Cheryl. Another testimonial from Europa McGovern, Chair of the City of Poughkeepsie Waterfront Advisory Committee, describes Captain Nick as having extensive experience and a magnetic personality and notes that time spent sailing with him “charted a new course” for their life. A camper named Zev, age 10, states that Captain Nick taught them how to steer the boat and how to raise the sail. Other testimonials from Hadas Liebermann and Anna Landewe describe Captain Nick’s knowledge of the area and local wildlife, his frequent interaction with children on board, the crew’s deep knowledge of local ecology, and a feeling of laid-back friendliness and attention to the wellbeing of everyone sailing.
