For over 50 years, New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL) has changed lives through tennis and education and now provides 3,000,000 participant hours of year-round programs in tennis, academics, healthy living, and character development for NYC youth. NYJTL runs comprehensive afterschool programming in 33 locations throughout New York City and is one of the largest providers of after school programs in the city, serving nearly 5,000 K–12 youths in over 30 school-based after school and summer programs, and 90,000 K–12 NYC youth overall. All NYJTL community and afterschool programs are offered at no cost to participants, including 500,000 hours of free community tennis in 100% of NYC council districts, and 75,000 kids reached through tennis training for physical education instructors in all five boroughs.
The mission of New York Junior Tennis & Learning is to develop the character of young people through tennis and education for a lifetime of success on and off the court. Its multidisciplinary curriculum framework is designed around values inherent in tennis: Teamwork, Empathy, Positive Attitude, Fortitude, Leadership, and Responsibility, and every NYJTL course, from a tennis lesson to a community service project, is rooted in character development and social learning. In 2014–15, evaluations by the TASC Research Team reported that nearly 60% of NYJTL participants increased both their English and Math grades from the first to the final marking period.
NYJTL celebrates the diversity of the children who participate in every program and serves youth from all five boroughs, with 10,000 children mentored annually by 500 NYJTL staff and over 50 years of continuous service. These programs are funded by partners at the Department of Youth and Community Development and the New York State Education Department. In 2013, the U.S. Tennis Association honored Skip with its National Junior Tennis and Learning Founders’ Service Award for 40 years of efforts to grow junior tennis programs in New York City and around the country.
