SchoolNova at Stony Brook began in 2002 as a small initiative led by a group of Russian-speaking scientists and educators from Brookhaven National Laboratory and officially launched under the SchoolPlus network by September 2004. During a period of corporate restructuring within SchoolPlus, SchoolNova became an independent institution and developed new partnerships within the local community. By 2024, SchoolNova had 40 instructors teaching over 100 classes, with over 450 students enrolling each year, and it has celebrated 20 years of operation.

Instructors at SchoolNova include university researchers, scientists, and educators with advanced degrees in their fields, and many senior students become Teaching Assistants. The school offers 11 years of Mathematics, 7 years of Sciences (including Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, and General Science), 3 years of Languages, and 4 years of Art, with small-group, ability-based learning instead of large, age-based classes. The enrichment program covers 12 different subjects, many at multiple levels, and includes a broader science program and advanced math courses, as well as language immersion with French, Spanish, and Russian classes starting at age six and early childhood English and Russian classes for ages 3–5.

SchoolNova at Stony Brook is a tax-exempt, registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Every year, students earn top awards in national and international competitions in mathematics, physics, and humanities, and alumni go on to study at universities such as Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and the University of Chicago. The Principal of SchoolNova is Marina Polonskaia. SchoolNova and the Department of Mathematics invite students in grades 8 and below to participate in the AMC 8 National Math Competition.
