SchoolNova at Stony Brook began in 2002 and officially launched under the SchoolPlus network by September 2004. It has celebrated 20 years of operation, and in 2024 there are 40 instructors teaching over 100 classes, with a student body of approximately 450. The Principal of SchoolNova is Marina Polonskaia. Instructors include university researchers, scientists, and educators with advanced degrees in their fields.

The mission of SchoolNova is to ignite a passion for mathematics and science, nurture linguistic skills, foster an appreciation for art, and cultivate a stimulating learning environment. SchoolNova is a tax-exempt, registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and every year students participate in national and international competitions in mathematics, physics, and humanities, earning top awards. Alumni go on to study at universities across the U.S., including Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and the University of Chicago.

SchoolNova is described as a community of teachers, students, and parents united by a shared passion for education, and many senior students become Teaching Assistants. The program began as an initiative led by Russian-speaking scientists and educators from Brookhaven National Laboratory and later became an independent institution to foster new partnerships within the local community. It is an enrichment program offering 12 different subjects, many at multiple levels, with both in-person and online lessons, small-group ability-based learning, and advanced higher-level math and science courses at an accelerated pace.

Language immersion with French, Spanish, and Russian starts at age six, and early childhood English and Russian classes are offered for ages 3 to 5. SchoolNova offers a comprehensive early childhood program for children ages 3 to 6 featuring instruction in English, French, Italian, and Spanish, along with formal linguistics. The curriculum includes 11 years of Mathematics, 7 years of Sciences (including Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, and General Science), 3 years of Languages, and 4 years of Art. There are no entrance exams, and a math placement test is offered after enrollment to determine level. Over 450 students enroll each year, and tuition is described as affordable with low cost while maintaining quality.
