Founded in 1990, Church Street School for Music and Art is the only nonprofit community school for the arts in lower Manhattan, with a 35 year legacy of accessible arts education for all. The school states that it is committed to providing high-quality art and music programs for diverse students of all ages, abilities, race, gender, sexual orientation, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds, and that it specializes in facilitating the physical creative process and strives to connect each student with their unique artistic voice. The school states that it believes in the transformative and therapeutic power of the arts and is dedicated to providing accessibility to the arts for all.
The leadership team includes Dr. Lisa Ecklund-Flores, CSSMA Co-Founder and Former Executive Director, and Dr. Christina Placilla, Executive Director of Church Street School for Music and Art. Music classes at the school incorporate The Dalcroze Method, described as a whole-body music education technique, and the school offers experiential learning based programs focusing on open-ended creation, improvisation, and exploration. Registration is ongoing for the Fall and Spring semesters, and the school also offers adult programs described as a mid-week creative respite.
Church Street School for Music and Art describes itself as a long-standing community resource dedicated to public programming and outreach. The school highlights community partnerships such as “Get to Know Tribeca Community School, CSSMA's New Community Partners!” and notes that the Tribeca Jazz Institute free monthly jam session is sponsored by Keyed Up and that other programming is sponsored by ACMP. One testimonial from Dr. Lisa Ecklund-Flores states, “Students who have had the opportunity to grow and thrive in an environment that supports curiosity, discovery, and creative expression have more self-confidence. They are more self-aware. This may be the most important gift we can give them in this complex and ever-changing world.” Another quoted statement from Emil Jaques-Dalcroze reads, “I know, because I have experienced.”
