Founded in 1990, Church Street School for Music and Art is the only nonprofit community school for the arts in lower Manhattan. The school offers experiential learning-based programs that focus on open-ended creation, improvisation, and exploration, with an emphasis on the individual student’s interests and curiosity while encouraging experimentation and play. Its programs place emphasis on process to celebrate the creative genius of children and build confidence beyond the art studio. Music classes incorporate the Dalcroze Method as an alternative to traditional methods of learning music theory for older children and adults. Adult programs are described as a mid-week creative respite, and private lessons and Band Factory classes are closed sessions for enrolled students only. One make-up private lesson per year, and later per semester, is offered under specified conditions.

Church Street School for Music and Art is a long-standing community resource dedicated to public programming and outreach, featuring a live lunchtime jazz performance in Bogardus Plaza. It has neighborhood partners including Tribeca Community School and hosts a student ensemble from the Tribeca Jazz Institute called the “Chamber Street Stompers.” Leadership has included Dr. Lisa Ecklund-Flores, CSSMA Co-Founder and Former Executive Director. According to Dr. Ecklund-Flores, students who grow and thrive in an environment that supports curiosity, discovery, and creative expression have more self-confidence and are more self-aware, which she describes as an important gift in a complex and ever-changing world.
