About
Oneonta Family YMCA Youth Programs include swimming, gymnastics, and preschool activities. Swimming is described as an important safety skill, great exercise, and a life-long sport. Gymnastics is offered for ages 24 months to 18 years, with levels ranging from Tumble Tots to Competitive Team, and preschoolers get to swim and gym at the Y. Reservations are required for both YMCA pools and fitness classes, and registration is required for programs and special events.
• Schedule: The Oneonta Family YMCA has weekday and Saturday hours, and the Y Specialty Fitness facility offers Monday–Saturday hours.
The Oneonta Family YMCA states that its mission is to strengthen community through programs and services that focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. The organization began on June 13, 1877, affiliated with the New York State YMCA in June 1878, and dedicated its Broad Street YMCA building on March 27, 1900. Planning for the present Ford Avenue building started with a capital campaign in 1963, the lot was purchased on January 6, 1964, and the Oneonta Family YMCA at 20–26 Ford Avenue was dedicated on June 27, 1965. An addition to this building was completed in 1990 after a capital campaign, and the first indoor swimming pool in the area was installed by the Y in April 1930. The first-floor gymnasium is named “The Mildred Wright Wing Gymnasium,” and its floor was replaced with a state-of-the-art gym floor in October 2009. An additional fitness studio was completed in December 2010 with an upgraded sound system and special flooring with rubber underneath it. In late 2010, a capital campaign led to the addition of Handicap Accessible and Family locker rooms on the second floor. Facility energy upgrades have included environmentally friendly cleaning and maintenance products, recycled paper products, lighting and heating system upgrades, HVAC and pool air handling and dehumidification system upgrades, water conservation measures, swimming pool covers, copper ionization pool water disinfection, and replacement of the gym roofs. In 2009, the Oneonta Family YMCA received an Excellence in Facilities award for Green/Environmentally Friendly efforts.
The Oneonta Family YMCA identifies W. Clyde Wright, Mildred Wright, and George I. Wilber in its leadership history, and records that George I. Wilber donated $4,000 in 1895 and the lot for the Broad Street building. It describes itself as built by and for the community and as an anchor institution since 1883, and notes that original meetings in 1907 to discuss the village becoming a city were held at the Broad Street YMCA. The organization states that children, teens, adults, seniors, and families are able to benefit from the Y because of donors, and that it continues to grow and operate as a cause-driven non-profit organization with the support of donors and volunteers.
