The Oneonta Family YMCA states that its mission is to strengthen community through programs and services that focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The organization notes that preschoolers, children, teens, adults, seniors, and families benefit from the Y with the support of donors and volunteers. The Association began on June 13, 1877, affiliated with the New York State YMCA in June 1878, and has been described as an anchor institution since 1883. Planning for a permanent home started in 1893, and the Broad Street YMCA building was dedicated on March 27, 1900, after George I. Wilber donated $4,000 and the lot in 1895. The first indoor swimming pool in the area was installed by the Y in April 1930. The present Ford Avenue building was purchased on January 6, 1964, and dedicated on June 27, 1965, after a capital campaign begun in 1963, with an additional campaign in 1985 leading to an addition completed in 1990. In October 2009, the first-floor Mildred Wright Wing Gymnasium received a state-of-the-art gym floor, and in 2009 the Oneonta Family YMCA received an Excellence in Facilities award for green and environmentally friendly efforts, including energy and facility upgrades and environmentally friendly products. An additional fitness studio with a specialized floor and sound system was completed in December 2010, and a later capital campaign added handicap accessible and family locker rooms on the second floor. The leadership history of the Y includes figures such as W. Clyde Wright, Mildred Wright, and George I. Wilber. The Y notes that original meetings in 1907 to discuss the village becoming a city were held at the Broad Street YMCA and that sponsors and community partners are thanked for making programs possible for children, teens, adults, seniors, and families.
