Carmel United Soccer Club was founded in 1980 as a volunteer-run, community-based, not-for-profit organization. It is a registered 501(c)(3) organization, and all Board of Directors members are volunteers who are not compensated for serving on the Board. The club is not a school or town sponsored program, and players predominantly come from within the Carmel Central School District. It offers a competitive travel program for ages 8 through high school and an inhouse/rec program for ages 3 through 13. The club is committed to training players to prepare them for high school level competition and beyond and, in conjunction with the Carmel Central School District, strives to continually feed players from its Travel program into the Carmel High School soccer program, including George Fischer Middle School Modified soccer, CHS Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams. Carmel United is not affiliated with any club in any other state with a similar name.
The mission of Carmel United is to provide developmental soccer programs for children residing predominantly within the Carmel Central School District footprint. The club states that it wants as many children as possible from the community playing soccer in the community. Its programs are described as providing both social and physical development for children of all skill levels in a supportive, safe, and positive development environment, and the club encourages and prioritizes teamwork, good sportsmanship, education, and community with the objective of preparing players to compete for the local high school soccer program.
The Board of Directors comprises five elected Board Officers and eight appointed Trustees. The leadership team includes Joe Matera (President & Travel Program Director), Barbara Ferreira (Vice President & Inhouse Program Director), Phil Larkin (Vice President), a vacant Secretary position, Jennifer Wiener (Treasurer, interim), Marc Gard (Head Coach, U8–U12), Vasiliy Shevelchinsky (Head Coach, U13–U19 & Academy Director), Keren Larkin (Referee Coordinator), Sean Hall (Field Coordinator), Chris Hundersmarck (Trustee), and vacant positions for Marketing Coordinator, Fundraising Coordinator, and Inhouse Coordinator. Board members are not paid, the Board of Directors meets on the 4th Monday of each month via Zoom, and the Annual General Meeting takes place at the regularly scheduled June board meeting. The 2026 Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, immediately before the regular Board meeting.
