Long Island Science Center STEM Learning Programs include hands-on activities such as 3D Printing & Design and MakerSpace projects. The programs use STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) curriculum and programs for various age groups to prepare them for 21st-century careers.

• Schedule: Museum hours by appointment, with additional open hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends and daily hours listed as 11 AM–5 PM
For more than 25 years, the Long Island Science Center has introduced over 375,000 kids to the world of science. The organization is a 501(c)3 STEAM learning museum with a mission to prepare young people for the challenges of a 21st century economy built on advanced technology and innovation. Its mission statement describes a focus on interactive exhibits, STEAM curricula and programs, and partnerships with local corporations, historical societies, and professional societies to develop exhibits and programs about Long Island’s history of technology, invention, and scientific advancement. The Long Island Science Center states that its experience is designed to stimulate and encourage a life-long interest in the sciences and promote science literacy in both children and adults.
The Long Island Science Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Its community involvement includes partnerships with local corporations, historical societies, and professional societies, a Homeless Shelter STEM Outreach Program to provide STEAM education for children residing in homeless shelters, and a focus on closing the gap of STEAM inequities in underserved communities, including girls and minorities. It encourages community support through joining a committee or becoming a sponsor and has secured funding through grants from New York State (through Empire State Development) and Suffolk County.
Planned features for the Long Island Science Center include a 24,000 square foot museum center experience with world-class exhibitions for kids and their parents, a real planetarium on top of the new building, a coffee shop, store, classrooms, a large glass-covered rooftop with an observation deck overlooking the Peconic River and Town Square, bio-gardens, event space, and a world-class planetarium. The organization also describes a state-of-the-art makerspace goal for expansion of STEAM learning, invention, experimentation, and innovation, expansion of STEAM curricula to include all stages of primary and secondary education (Pre-K–12th grade), a Homeless Shelter Outreach program, and a Rising Girls initiative to address the decline in girls’ interest in STEM as early as 4th grade.
