About

AYSO Region 405 - Rome/Lee offers youth soccer programs as part of the American Youth Soccer Organization. The program is part of a national organization that focuses on youth soccer programs for children who register to play.

• Ages: 5–15 years old

AYSO was established with only nine teams by a handful of soccer enthusiasts in 1964 out of a garage in Torrance, California, and is the oldest national youth soccer program in the United States. Its mission is to develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs which promote a fun, family environment based on six philosophies: Open Registration, Balanced Teams, Everyone Plays, Good Sportsmanship, Player Development, and Positive Coaching. The mission states that programs are open to all children between the ages of 5 and 15 who want to register and play soccer, that teams are set up as evenly balanced as possible at the start of each season, and that every registered player must play at least half of every game if they arrive before the game starts. The mission also states that programs are intended to create a positive environment based on mutual respect, to allow players to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, and to train and encourage coaches to offer positive help rather than negative criticism.

AYSO is a non-profit organization that provides youth soccer programs in nearly 900 communities across the United States and internationally in the Virgin Islands and Trinidad and Tobago. It consists of over 50,000 teams and 500,000 players nationwide and is often called “the biggest soccer club in the world.” AYSO reports having over six million alumni, and nearly 150,000 registered volunteers run local programs across the country. Every coach, referee, Regional Commissioner, National Board of Directors member, and the National President are AYSO volunteers. AYSO describes itself as a soccer program for the entire family, with a kid-first approach and priorities that include “Everyone Plays,” “Balanced Teams,” “Open Registration,” “Children are our priority,” “Positive Coaching,” and “fun is the name of the game.” Michael Karon, President of AYSO, was recently recognized by Stack Sports for his impact in the world of sports volunteering. The organization has also announced partnerships with the Northland Sports Alliance in Kansas City, Chicago Public Schools, and the US Center for Mental Health & Sport, with the stated focus on expanding soccer programming and player and volunteer wellness.
