Saugerties AYSO Region 595 is a wholly local and volunteer run non-profit 501(c)(3) soccer organization. The program is dedicated to six core philosophies: Everyone Plays, Open Registration, Balanced Teams, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship and Player Development. Every player on every team must play at least 50% of every game, and each year new teams are formed as evenly balanced as possible. The program is open to all children who want to register and play soccer, with no elimination try-outs and nobody cut. The program has seen thousands of children enjoy soccer at its location.
Oskar Benzenhoefer, known as the “Father of Saugerties Soccer,” formed a youth soccer team in 1972. In 1987, Saugerties Soccer joined the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), becoming Region #595. Leadership for the program includes Oskar Benzenhoefer and Michael Karon, President of AYSO. AYSO’s mission is to develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs which promote a fun, family environment based on AYSO’s Six Philosophies: Everyone Plays, Open Registration, Balanced Teams, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship and Player Development. AYSO states that it provides world class youth soccer programs that enrich children's lives.
Saugerties AYSO relies on sponsors from the local community to help with expenses such as uniforms, soccer balls, awards, equipment and training for players, coaches and referees, and scholarships. Many of Oskar Benzenhoefer’s former players have coached in the league. AYSO has partnerships with Chicago Public Schools and with Northland Sports Alliance in Kansas City to expand youth soccer programming. As a registered non-profit organization, AYSO sponsorships are tax deductible. AYSO is described as the biggest soccer club in the world with nearly 900 community programs and 500,000 players.
