Avalon Nature Preserve’s youth programs are part of a broader mission that includes habitat restoration, innovative land management techniques, and community outreach and youth programs for children of all ages. Leadership for youth and community programming includes Katharine Griffiths for Natural Connections, Kayla Serina for Nature Initiative, and Sue Wahlert for Seedlings. The preserve has permanently protected 216 acres on Long Island’s north shore, with meadows, woodlands, shoreline, and trails through five distinct habitats open for the public to explore and enjoy. Community involvement connected to youth and public programs includes monthly Skylab events to learn more about the universe, the Nature Initiative program, and nature walks with the Audubon Society, as well as partnerships such as work with the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry on the American Chestnut restoration project and OHoneyBeeFarm’s managed hives on the land since before 2018.
