iCAMP offers hands-on activities such as drone flying, 3D printing, video game design, architecture, art and design, coding, robotics, studio and graphic art, science, filmmaking, digital and studio art, engineering, sustainable energy, circuitry, mechanics, Lego robotics, cooking, Esports, Minecraft, and Roblox. Campers also take part in environmental science and ecology of Eastern Long Island, science experiments, exploring nature, and active summer camp games.
• Ages: 3–13 years old
• Schedule: Summer camps for ages 3–13 run roughly mid-June through mid-August, with Hamptons programs starting in early June and going until Labor Day, and a standard camp day from 9:00am–3:00pm
iCAMP started in 2018 and has been operating for at least five years under co-founders Lulu and Brendan Manley. The mission states that the program was created for kids to learn creativity, confidence, and critical thinking through physical and digital creative tools, and it pledges to provide a STEAM enrichment experience for both parents and children. All instructors have experience working with children in large group settings, use project-based learning, and are recruited based on experience and passion for teaching, and the staff-to-camper ratio is 5:1 or better. Examples of staff backgrounds include Charles, who has taught K–12 art and design since 2012 and holds an MFA in Media Design, an MEd in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in Adolescent Literacy, and a BA in Liberal Studies with strong concentrations in Studio Art, English, and Music; Erica, who teaches physics, mathematics, and technological design to high school students and is a former engineering professional; and Adrian Drake, who has nearly three decades in environmental protection and education, has worked as an environmental lobbyist and educator with thousands of students across the tri-state area, is a fourth grade teacher at Sag Harbor Elementary, and holds a Masters in Literacy Education.
The program notes that camp days are mostly spent outdoors and that daily activities include active summer camp games. iCAMP also offers before and after school enrichment classes, “mommy and me” sessions using art and science to reinforce developing motor skills, holiday camps for every school holiday, and very small virtual class sizes of three or four students. Additional features include private servers and coaches for a Roblox Video Game League, a no-visitors-on-campus policy for in-person summer camp, equipment being wiped down between sessions, temperature checks at the beginning of the day, and a refund of 90% under specified conditions related to camp or state cancellations or positive coronavirus tests. Operational details include students washing hands between workshops, lunch not being provided on campus, parents staying in their cars for pick up and drop off with staggered drop-off shifts by last name, instructors wearing masks and gloves, and campers placed in small groups sitting apart.
Outside of summer, iCAMP provides before and after school programming to many independent and public schools and offers after school classes at partner schools in New York City and Philadelphia. Parent testimonials describe real teachers who get kids excited about learning, mention that some families extended from one week to five weeks, and note that campers worked on passion projects showcased in a Friday gallery walk and continued using tools from iCAMP months later. Other parents describe the curriculum as something their kids were eager to talk about each day, highlight staff who were hands-on and dedicated to helping children learn, and say that the camp’s projects and staff had a strong impact on their children.
