Beech Creek Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve Educational Programs are part of Beech Creek Gardens, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The organization began in 1999 as a grass roots effort by a small group of individuals who started discussions with like-minded community members and developed the first Board of Trustees. In 2003 it purchased 164 acres and drafted the first strategic plan, received its first education grant in 2005, and opened to the public in 2006 with one hiking trail and a small parking lot. A seasonal butterfly house opened in 2008, followed by the Amazing Garden Plant Science Center in 2010, when the organization began teaching 2,000 students a year on school field trips. The Visitor Center opened in 2012, along with on-site offices and the founders being officially hired as Directors, and additional adjacent acres were purchased in 2013 and 2019. In 2016, the REALL Development phase added public restrooms, storage, additional parking, and a Caterpillar Nursery, general admission and new gardens were implemented in 2017, and the 2-acre Natureplace playground opened in 2018. Beech Creek Gardens states that it provides educational opportunities and interactive experiences that inspire people to be good stewards of their communities and the world, and that it believes quality of life and the health of the environment are interdependent and that an understanding of nature improves the lives of individuals.
