Fernside was established in 1986 as the nation’s second oldest children’s grief center. Fernside is an affiliate of Hospice of Cincinnati, and its services complement Hospice of Cincinnati’s comprehensive bereavement program by addressing the needs of children. Over 1,300 children, teens and adults attend support groups at Fernside annually, and services include community outreach and crisis programs, in-school groups, camps and retreats, workshops, trainings, and consultations. Fernside is one of 30 grief-centered organizations selected to participate in the Childhood Bereavement Changemaker (CBC) Program, conceived by Judi’s House/JAG Institute with philanthropic support from New York Life Foundation in collaboration with the National Alliance for Children’s Grief. Hospice of Cincinnati, Fernside’s affiliate, is a non-profit hospice sponsored by Bethesda Inc. in a collaborative community partnership with TriHealth and Bon Secours Mercy Health, and bi3, a grants initiative and strategic partner of TriHealth, awarded $1.3 million to Fernside Center for Grieving Children to expand capacity and youth mental wellness services into area schools.
