Professional Apprentice Program
Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, 1127 Vine St, Cincinnati, OH 45202
About
The Professional Apprentice Program includes understudying or performing suitable main-stage roles and immersive experiential programming that is curated for each production. Applicants complete an online application, upload a résumé and personal artistic statement, and, for acting applicants, include a headshot and a link to a recorded audition. The program uses an annual audition and interview process, and some applicants may be invited to interview on Zoom.
• Schedule: Concentrated 10-month program
At the end of the season, the apprentice company is celebrated with its own fully produced show, and apprentices leave the program with a portfolio of practical work experience and job skills. A class of apprentices is recruited to serve as the core company for the season, sharing in daily organizational and artistic operations, and The Apprentice Company is described as the foundation of the ensemble, with members nurtured and valued for their role in the organization’s operations and purpose. Acting apprentice experience is amplified through immersive experiential programming curated for each production.
Participants hone their practical skills through close, hands-on interaction with artists and staff for an entire season and work collectively to fulfill the mission of using theatre for social change. The program is described as a season-long immersive experience for professionally bound actors pursuing careers in the arts and for emerging professional theatre makers, and it serves as a springboard for early-career theatre-makers on their professional path. Ensemble Theatre is committed to equity and diversity and to providing an inclusive, welcoming, and safe artistic space where all can collaborate freely, with a creative culture empowered by people who represent a range of identities, body inclusivity, abilities, ideas, and personal expressions.
For the application process, applicants provide support materials including a personal artistic statement, a current résumé, and two completed recommendation forms submitted by references by the application deadline. Acting candidates submit a current headshot and a recorded self-tape consisting of two contrasting monologues. Applicants will hear back regardless of application or acceptance status, and the application deadline for the 2026–2027 season has passed. The program notes that no phone calls are taken regarding questions about the audition process or program. Torie Wiggins and Shannon Rae Lutz are the apprentice programming team.
