About
Columbus Glass Art Center Classes include hands-on sessions in fused glass, stained glass, mosaics, flameworking, and hot shop work with molten glass. Participants use cold sheets of fusible glass and special tools to cut and arrange custom designs, cut and grind stained glass pieces to fit patterns before foiling and soldering, and arrange glass fragments on tiles to grout into place. Classes also include working with borosilicate glass on a Red Max torch to make larger and more advanced glass sculptures and learning the basics of blown glass tubing and color application, as well as hot shop time working with molten glass from the furnace to blow hollow forms or sculpt solid glass using heat, color, and tools.
• Schedule: Classes are offered Tuesday–Friday between 12pm and 7pm, and Saturday between 10am and 4pm.
Founded in 1987, the organization later established a glassmaking studio in what is now Columbus’ Arena District, moved to the Grandview area in 2001, and in 2014 moved to a larger space in the Franklinton Arts District. During 2024, the board and staff chose the new name, Columbus Glass Art Center. The center operates as a comprehensive glass-making facility that includes molten glass, casting, fusing, neon, stained glass, cold working, and torch working, and it offers hundreds of classes and public programs each year, exhibition and retail space, high school and college internship programs, and a work credit program. Columbus Glass Art Center has grown to over 120 members, including amateur and professional artists, and has become a civic hub for glass art creation and learning and a place of cultural equity that continues to adapt and grow. The mission of Columbus Glass Art Center is to celebrate the art and science of glass.
The leadership team includes Alex, Assistant Director; Rose, Facilities Manager; Anita, Office Manager; John, Shop Technician; Ken Donchatz, President; Maria Wineinger, Secretary; Julie Klein, Member Liaison; and members Gary Janchenko, Larry Clark, and Angel Grunenwald. The group built a portable glass blowing studio and traveled throughout Central Ohio teaching glass art, with a focus on the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s Artists-in-Schools Program. Columbus Glass Art Center also hosts an annual Mardi Gras-themed fundraising party called Glassquerade 2026 and a pop-up gallery show featuring glass artists John Sharvin and Minhi England, with imaginary and playful sculptures on display from Saturday Feb. 14 to Saturday Feb. 21.
