The Academy of Martial Arts Studies describes itself as a family run, family based training facility with age- and rank-appropriate simultaneous instruction and the ability to run more than one class or split a class into different levels at the same time. All classes are described as age and experience appropriate, and Beginner Series Classes allow adult parent beginners to train on one side while their kids train on the other side with their own instructor. The Tiny Tigers pre-school program builds confidence, self control, focus, memory, and cardio while teaching basic karate moves, has no tests, and awards new belts for time in and dedication, with treats and stickers at the end of class. All classes include a Zoom link for viewing by parents, relatives, and students who are home sick, and the teaching style is described as encouraging and uplifting in a family style environment. The Academy states that its martial arts instructors have over 100 years of martial arts experience, ranging from 50 years to a minimum of 8 years per instructor, and that it offers more choices, more classes, and more experience than any school in the area.
The leadership team includes Hanshi Kevin “Huunjin” Cullen as Soke, Grandmaster, Chief Instructor, Headmaster, and founder of Ateru Goju Ryu Karate Jutsu; Renshi Jim Zellner as Chief Instructor; Sensei Harley Ferris as Chief Assistant Instructor; Sensei Michael Cook as Adjunct Assistant; Sensei Coy Schlumbohm and Sensei Greg Lowery as Assistant Instructors; Dr. Alexis Caroline (Lexi) as technical developmental advisor for the Tiny Tigers program; and Evan Boehler, Renshi James Kindle, and Renshi Larr Etzler as instructors. On staff are 8 certified black belt instructors, including a 10th Degree Black Belt Grandmaster/Hanshi with teaching credentials, a 5th Degree Black Belt Renshi with teaching credentials, three 3rd Degree Black Belts, a Second Degree Black Belt, and two Shodans (First Degree Black Belts), and all instructors are described as Nationally and Internationally Ranked and Certified, with most academically degreed as well as belted in a variety of martial arts disciplines. Hanshi Kevin Cullen has been consistently training in Goju since 1973, holds a 10th Dan Soke (2002) in Ateru Goju, has been vetted and recognized by the World Head of Family Sokeship Council as a legitimate Soke and Grandmaster and as founder of a legitimate and unique form of Goju, and has earned multiple black belts in other martial arts. Several instructors, including Renshi Jim Zellner, Sensei Harley Ferris, Sensei Michael Cook, Sensei Coy Schlumbohm, Sensei Greg Lowery, Dr. Alexis Caroline, and Evan Boehler, have additional academic degrees or professional qualifications, and Dr. Alexis Caroline serves as technical developmental advisor for Tiny Tigers.
The Academy of Martial Arts Studies states as its mission that it is more than a karate school and is a true Academy of Martial Arts Studies that accommodates students from age 3 and up and instills in them the precepts of Health, Education and Commitment. The Academy has been voted The Best Martial Arts School for four years in a row and counting in Findlay and Hancock County and thanks the community for this recognition. Ateru Goju Ryu Karate Jutsu is recognized by the World Head of Family organization as well as seven other international councils.
