MovementWorks Dance and Fitness states that its mission is to nurture growth in body, mind, and spirit through developmentally appropriate, noncompetitive, and family-centered programs, and to empower individuals of all ages starting as young as 6 months to explore movement, creativity, and connection through dance, yoga, acro, cheer, and early childhood education. The environment is described by the program as welcoming, noncompetitive, and family-friendly, where individuals of all ages can grow in body, mind, and spirit. The program highlights movement and education that honors the whole person—body, mind, and heart—and a focus on movement, mindfulness, and wellness regardless of income, age, or ability.
MovementWorks Dance and Fitness has been serving the community for over 10 years and has taught more than 1,100 students and held over 50 summer camps. The program has 10 professionals on staff who are highly trained and experienced in movement and early childhood education. The leadership team includes Jess Widener-Pruitt (she/her), Director, Choreographer, Dance Teacher, Enrichment Teacher, RYT 500, and Lindsey Armstrong (she/her), Administrative Director and Enrichment Sub. Jess Widener-Pruitt is trained in Montessori instruction through Oaksmont Montessori Teacher Training and holds certifications in Yoga Teaching, Mindfulness Coaching, and Meditation Guidance through My Vinyasa Practice. Lindsey Armstrong holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration and an Associate’s Degree in Agribusiness and Marketing Technologies. Jess Widener-Pruitt has been named a 2-time All-American Dancer and a 3-time UDA All-Star and has performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with the Mike Miller Dance Team.
MovementWorks Dance and Fitness is trusted by OberlinKids Collaborative, Elyria City Schools, Oberlin Business Partnership, and Oberlin College Dance Department. Its sister organization, Movement Pathways, partners with schools, libraries, assisted living facilities, and community organizations and offers free and low-cost programs, scholarships, and pay-what-you-can opportunities. A reviewer reports that the MovementWorks crew visits a local senior living community three times a year to put on a performance for older adults.
Parent and participant reviews describe a beautiful facility and staff, many different programs and activities for children, and a place for beginners with years of experience and professional development. Reviews also describe staff who are friendly, who care about the kids, and who offer fun activities that keep young children happy and learning, with a warm and inviting atmosphere and a strong sense of community. One reviewer calls out warm and welcoming yoga classes and describes them as the best yoga classes they have taken, and another notes that the studio stands out because the owner, Jess, runs it with the whole child in mind, including character building, leadership opportunities, and individual attention. Another reviewer from a local senior living community states that it brings joy to see the young people doing what they love and that it is obvious that giving back to the community is a priority.
