About

Children’s Theatre Workshop offers writing, acting, set design, behind-the-scenes work, theatre games, improv, and technical theater, all leading to producing a short play. Students study many aspects of theatre arts, including characterization, devising original theatre, and participating in a musical theatre program. All of the technical work, including lights, sound, props, and scenery, is handled by the students in the program, and performances take place after 10 weeks of classes.

• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Performances are after the 10 weeks of classes.

Children’s Theatre Workshop offers an inclusive environment for children of all backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles where they study many aspects of theatre arts, develop valuable life skills, and produce quality plays. The program uses an informal, classroom-based structure, and all students enrolled in classes are eligible to audition in plays put on for live audiences. Anyone who auditions gets a part in the show somewhere, and each program includes a fully mounted production as a culmination of the semester learnings.

Programs are divided into four groups: Early Stages (ages 3–6), Players Company (ages 7–9), Ensemble Company (ages 10–12), and Teen Company (ages 13–18). Early Stages Company for ages 5–6 presents a small, 10–15 minute play at the conclusion of their classes. Players Company for ages 7–9 performs traditional children’s theatre, usually folk tales and fairy tales. Ensemble Company for ages 10–12 produces original works written by the students of the Ensemble under the guidance of Executive Artistic Director Aimee Reid, and Teen Company for ages 13–18 alternates between comedies and dramas. Productions are presented twice a year for each company, and the unofficial motto is “theatre for children, by children,” with the Ensemble’s Devising program regularly producing student-written work and the organization greatly expanding summer offerings.

Children’s Theatre Workshop was founded in 1954 through a collaboration between the University of Toledo’s chapter of the American Association of University Women and the Toledo Junior League. Executive Artistic Director Aimee Reid leads the program and received the Ann Elgood Youth Theatre Director of the Year Award in 2018 from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. Children’s Theatre Workshop is a nonprofit 501c3 organization, and its 2022–23 season is made possible in part by state tax dollars allocated by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council. CTW was noted in Toledo Area Parent as the Best Theatre/Drama Classes for 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, was runner-up in 2013 and 2014, and was voted runner-up for the Best Theater in the Toledo City Paper in 2013.

CTW offers a number of special programs in live theater for Toledo and area youth and has collaborated with other Toledo-area organizations. These collaborations have included theatrical performances and workshops for the Collingwood Arts Center, the Toledo Botanical Gardens, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, and the Old West End Festival.
