Samara Learning Center Tutoring & Homeschool Support offers one-on-one tutoring, small group tutoring, and homeschool support. The program also provides test preparation, classes, events, Enrichment Classes & Camps, and a Physical Education class. It offers a free consultation and uses compensatory strategies to support students with their learning challenges.
Samara Learning Center Tutoring & Homeschool Support offers inclusive and personalized learning instruction for youth with neurotypical and neurodivergent needs. It is an alternative education program approved by the Oregon Department of Education, and scholarships and financial aid are provided with the support of community contributions, with Bend Parks and Rec offering financial assistance for Enrichment Classes & Camps. The mission of the program is to provide students with learning differences a program that promotes the development of specific skills in academics, language, social-emotional learning, and creative growth, and to fortify success attributes such as proactivity, perseverance, self-awareness, self-advocacy, and problem solving. The leadership team includes Founder and Executive Director Heather Chatem, who is also a Lead Teacher; Lead Teacher, Special Education Tutor, and Executive Assistant Sarah Compton; and PE Instructor, Tutor, and Enrichment Program Lead Tony Taylor. Heather Chatem has a B.A. in Psychology, an M.A. in Special Education & Rehabilitation with a Specialty in Learning Disabilities, Autism Authorization Training, a Special Education Teaching Credential PreK-12, and an Administration License; Sarah Compton holds a B.A in Biology with a minor in Psychology and an M.S. in Education; and Tony Taylor has a B.S. in Kinesiology from Humboldt State University and is currently pursuing a degree in Nursing. Bend Parks and Rec is a partner for Enrichment Classes & Camps, Bend Roots Revival raises money for children’s music and art programs connected to the center, and Heather Chatem is a co-facilitator for Central Oregon Attention Deficit Disorder (COADD) and Decoding Dyslexia Central Oregon information and support groups.
