Plans to build the first indoor pickleball facility connected to this program began in 2016, and the larger Zone facility opened its doors on October 29, 2018. The Oregon Pickleball Academy operates within a state-of-the-art indoor facility and training academy that includes a 55,000 square foot complex with 8 dedicated pickleball courts on the third floor and a fourth-floor lounge with views over 11 mountain peaks. The program offers a limited number of Annual Memberships and also offers Sunbird Memberships from May 1 through October 31. The Pickleball Zone combines memberships with organized play sessions and court rentals for the public, and clinics and community events are organized.

The mission of the Oregon Pickleball Academy is to set the standard for excellence in pickleball instruction and player development, with offerings designed to help players improve with purpose and to support athletes of every level, from beginners through recreational and competitive players. Thanks to Werner Zehnder and Butch Roberts, the indoor facility and training academy came to fruition. In 2024, Linda Thorsen and Matt Wessels, who have been with Werner from day one, became partners in the Pickleball Zone, and in 2025, two new partners, Chris Vacca and Conor Carlsen, joined the team.

Staff credentials include Kelsie, who played Division I tennis at the University of California, Davis, where she was a three-time All-Conference player and two-time co-captain, and who attended OHSU to become a registered dietitian. Raegan recently completed her IPTPA teaching certification, earned All American status, and was inducted into the Georgia Southern University Hall of Fame. Allen became a certified pickleball referee, has refereed hundreds of matches, later became a certified instructor, and was inducted into the Hall of Champions for his achievements on and off the racecourse in 2004. Conor earned his IPTPA teaching certification in 2024.
