Southern Oregon Head Start and Early Head Start offer free early childhood education in both center and home-based options. Children in Early Head Start and Head Start enjoy playing and learning in a safe, educational setting with qualified, caring teachers. Children in these programs receive free healthy meals and snacks, as well as health, dental, and developmental screenings, and accommodations are offered to meet the special needs of children who experience disabilities.

Southern Oregon Head Start was founded in 1967. Head Start is a federal and state funded program for preschool children age 3–5, and Early Head Start services are available for pregnant women and for infants and toddlers from birth to age 3. Southern Oregon Head Start offers free preschool to qualifying families and serves over 1200 children daily through 27 centers in Josephine and Jackson counties. Services include early childhood education, family support, health, nutrition, disabilities and mental health services, and free parenting education classes and resources.
Southern Oregon Head Start prepares children and their families for success in school and throughout life. The program supports a Spanish Family Literacy Program, and LISTO Family Literacy is a program of Southern Oregon Head Start that provides culturally specific learning opportunities for Latinx families in the community. The institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, age, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity, and persons with disabilities and limited English proficiency have the right to free language assistance and accommodations.
Parents and caregivers describe their experiences with Southern Oregon Head Start and Early Head Start in many ways. One Head Start parent said, “It’s helped improve his language skills and his sharing skills. Head Start is a great program.” Another Early Head Start parent shared, “So many wonderful people at EHS have helped my children learn to trust other people.” A Head Start scholarship recipient said, “The staff is awesome and helps with whatever they can. Head Start will always be a big part of my heart and my life.” Another parent said, “Without Head Start, we wouldn’t be able to raise the family we’re raising today.”
