About
Northwest Youth Corps Programs include paid conservation service work through residential conservation crews, local community crews, and community wildfire protection crews. The programs also offer a para-professional internship program for college-aged participants and a fully accredited high school that combines conservation service-work with academics. Participants take part in backcountry and community-based crews that focus on conservation service-work.
• Ages: 12–18 years old
Northwest Youth Corps Programs began in 1984, when operations started out of a defunct gas station, and were founded by Art Pope. The organization engages nearly 1,000 young people each year, with almost one thousand youth and young adults developing solid work skills through more than 300,000 hours of service across four states. Its mission is to provide opportunities for youth and young adults to learn, grow, and experience success through paid conservation service work that enhances public lands and strengthens communities across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, and to provide a challenging education and job-training experience that helps youth and young adults develop the skills they need to lead full and productive lives.
Northwest Youth Corps Programs operate a fully accredited and chartered high school and are described as the largest and oldest youth conservation corps in the region, as well as the largest and most effective conservation corps in the region, with a national reputation for innovation and quality. Programs combine education, leadership, challenge, service, and empowerment, with a focus on teamwork and accountability, and draw participants and staff from a broad range of backgrounds and abilities. Participants can earn academic credit and professional job references through their conservation service-work.
