For 50 years, dance classes had been offered in the historic Laurel Community Hall, and Judie Sandell operated a private dance school there for over 20 years. In 1998, a small group of volunteers rescued the school from its planned closure, and it now operates as a local nonprofit dance school and a non-profit community-based organization. The mission of Laurel Valley School of Dance is to promote the development and well-being of children, adults, and the community of Washington County by providing dance and movement programs and services. The school uses an Adventist Church building that has two studio spaces, a family lounge, and storage space. Its central location in the Laurel Valley community allows it to serve dancers from Hillsboro, Beaverton, Tigard, Forest Grove, Gaston, and Newberg, and it invites parents to become involved in this community participation. The leadership team includes an LVSD Board of Directors with Jill Payne as President, Jean Phillips as Vice President, Meghan Randall as Treasurer, and Ken Weston as Secretary. The clothing exchange invites ladies to bring unwanted clothing to exchange and includes children’s clothing, which participants are asked to sort by size and gender.
