Hood River Valley Parks + Recreation Youth Activities is part of the Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District, which includes facilities such as the Hood River Aquatic Center, Culbertson Park, Barrett Creek Trail, Morrison Disc Golf Course, Odell Community Park, Rotary Skate Park, and Westside Community Trail. The mission of the Hood River Valley Parks + Recreation District is to provide recreational opportunities to the citizens of the Park District, with a focus on the youth of the community, and to develop and maintain facilities and programs that offer safe and economical recreational environments for all users. The District reports serving the Hood River community since 1988, states that its pool has connected people in the community since 1988, and notes having over 40 years of experience providing aquatic, trail, and park recreation opportunities. The District highlights a focus on youth, seniors, and Latinxs, and states that its pool teaches life-saving swimming skills and what to do if someone gets “in over your head.” The District also notes that trails meander from downtown to the Hood River Valley and describes its role in helping people find balance with a pace set for longevity and well-being, including healing, conquering fears, and growing connections. Leadership includes Director Mark Hickok, Assistant Director Marcie Wily, Admin Assistant Kelsey Barnes, Aquatic Center Supervisor Ally Kriskewic, Assistant Supervisor Kenna Harris, Recreation Supervisor Jaime Rivera, Assistant Supervisor Gio Mangaña-Rivera, Program Coordinator Kennedy Breithaupt, and Maintenance Supervisor Anthony Johnston, with a five-member Board of Directors elected by citizens of the District. Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District has received a grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to purchase 4.1 acres of Parkdale Park. The District notes that it is not the only provider of parks and recreation in Hood River County, and that the City of Hood River, Hood River County, Port of Hood River, and Hood River County School District also provide parks and recreation.
